What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty involves removal of excess skin and fat around the waist. An incision is placed at the belt line. The excess skin and fat (spare tire) is then removed surgically and discarded. The skin is pulled down and sewn back together. This is often performed with liposuction to contour the abdomen.

Is a tummy tuck a type of weight loss surgery?

Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for total body weight reduction. For that, still, diet and exercise are the best options. Rather, tummy tuck surgery is often complementary to weight reduction. Many patients diet and exercise to reduce their weight, only to have excess baggy skin and residual fat in the lower abdomen. For this problem, abdominoplasty remains the ideal solution.

Is it safe?

Abdominoplasty is a common plastic surgery procedure with thousands of patients each year in the United States, most without any complications. Nevertheless, some risk is present with all surgery. Bleeding, infection, skin ulcer, belly button skin ulcer, asymmetry, hernia are known complications of this surgery. Our Virginia and Maryland surgeons are fully trained in this procedure and perform many succesful abdominoplasties each year. A personal consultation will help further answer any questions you have about abdominoplasty.
